File an LLC yourself or use a service? (2026)
Filing yourself is fine for a simple LLC. This is the whole job, so you can compare it with a price.
- Check the name on your state’s business search.
- File the formation document with the Secretary of State. The fee runs $35 to $500 by state.
- Name a registered agent with a street address in the state (yourself in 7 states that allow it).
- Apply for the EIN with the IRS, free.
- Write an operating agreement if there is more than one owner.
- Calendar the report. 6 states have none; the rest charge $7 or more.
Mainstay Filing, our pick, does steps 2 to 4 and the report for $199 a year plus the state fee. Choose it if you want one price that does not rise; file yourself if you only need the filing. Pick a state to see the numbers: all 50 states.
Questions
Is filing yourself cheaper?
On the state side it is the same fee. You save the service price, and you take on the agent address, the reminders and the filing mistakes.
Is the EIN free?
Yes. The IRS issues it online at no charge (IRS page, checked October 21, 2026).
